Fertile vs. Infertile Eggs

Left: Fertile                            Right: Infertile

We get asked a LOT of questions throughout the year about hatching eggs and incubation.  One of the most common questions we are asked is "How do you tell a Fertile egg from an Infertile egg?" With a little practice, you can easily identify a fertile hatching egg. This information can be extremely valuable to your breeding programs and is a necessity when you are wanting to sell your eggs for hatching purposes.  We crack eggs regularly, from each of the breeds that we raise and manually verify fertility...you can do the same!
First, hold your hand over the sink and crack the egg into the palm of your hand...allow the white part of the egg to run through your fingers, leaving only the yolk...gently roll the yolk around in the palm of your hand until the blastoderm is located...The blastoderm will have one of two appearances...the first will be a small cloudy ring, much resembling a “bullseye”….about the size of a small pencil eraser…This is a fertile egg...the second will resemble a “sharp white dot“...this is an infertile egg...easy as pie!   :)
