  • Eggs…they do a body good…..

    February 10, 2011

We have always stood firmly on the belief that eggs produced by our own chickens are much richer in nutrients than your typical store bought eggs. I read a great article in Mother Earth News yesterday that confirmed that fact!.... Give it a read.... :) http://www.motherearthnews.com/eggs.aspx

    To let you know,
    If you be wise,
    Tis time to rise.

……We have approximately 165 roosters on our farm...Trust me on this one..."sleeping in" is not an option……

  • My Old Barn Coat...

    February 10, 2011

I have an old barn coat that is tan with an olive green flannel lining...It has a brown corduroy collar...The lining has a few minor holes but, it is butter soft and weighty and warm. The collar shows some wear and it has a stain on the sleeve where I rubbed it against a poke berry bush…it has a small tear on the bottom hem where I caught it on a barbed wire fence and it has only one large...

  • Fertile vs. Infertile Eggs

    February 10, 2011

    Left: Fertile                            Right: Infertile

We get asked a LOT of questions throughout the year about hatching eggs and incubation.  One of the most common questions we are asked is "How do you tell a Fertile egg from an Infertile egg?" With a little practice, you can easily...

  • "Puss"

    February 1, 2011

As an adult, I have never loved cats…I have always considered myself to be a “dog person“….and even that is subject to the particular dog.  We own a Great Pyrenees who is invaluable to us as a farm dog.  Pete protects our livestock and keeps predators at a respectable distance.

He is also a majestically beautiful animal with huge warm brown eyes and I love him….he...

  • Eggs out the Wazzoo...

    January 21, 2011

Only about 75% of the hatching eggs that are gathered daily from our farm cut the mustard...Any undesirables are set aside for eating...

Many things can cause a hatching egg to not pass inspection...If an egg is: oddly shaped, porous, too small, too large, too light, too dark, deeply scratched, wrinkled, chalky, cracked, stained, thin-shelled or excessively “poopy” it is set aside...The eggs that pass inspection...

  • Baby Needs a New Pair of Shoes...

    January 19, 2011

My Farmer and my Father-in-law are headed over this morning to the Livestock Auction to watch our calves sell. We have 32 calves being sold in today’s auction. I do not attend the cattle auctions...there is way too much testosterone and spitting going on down there...have fun boys!

The calves had to be loaded and unloaded three times before they all decided to cooperate...

  • Run Chicken Run!

    January 15, 2011

We have approximately thirteen hundred mature breeding chickens on our farm so, we get to see a lot of chicken action around here…scratching, laying, crowing, dust bathing and well um, you know...but, my favorite of these activities is...running...chickens don’t run very well...You can’t help but laugh when you watch a chicken run...it’s a hoot!...I...
